I am currently working in regulatory affairs at Abbott Nutrition. Prior to that, I was in the same function with other multi-national companies such as GlaxoSmithKline, Procter and Gamble, Sanofi, Johnson and Johnson, Mead Johnson Nutrition.
I enjoyed various multi-disciplinary modules that were taught to us during my undergraduate studies. Out of these, I enjoyed FST3202 Nutrition and Disease Prevention module taught by Dr. Liu Mei Hui the most.
The Professional Placement module allowed me to better understand how food regulations are interpreted and applied in a corporate setting, and it also cemented my passion for a career in regulatory affairs.
Coming from a polytechnic background and having just completed National Service when I embarked on my undergraduate studies, it was challenging for me to catch up on the different modules taught in my freshman year. Thankfully, I had peers whom I could seek guidance from. The drastic increase in the workload during the sophomore year also meant that we had to plan our time efficiently and develop effective report writing skills so that we could hand in our laboratory reports on time.
There are many possible career options for FST graduates; you are not limited to just being a food scientist. It is also possible to pursue other postgraduate options as I completed my Masters in Pharmaceutical Science at NUS, whilst some of my peers went for other options such as Duke NUS.
