Undergraduate Programme Admission Information

  1. Primary Major in Food Science and Technology*

*No restriction to students who wish to do any minor or secondary major in other disciplines.
*Specialisations are proposed for students admitted to the primary major in FST from AY2021/2022 onwards.

^All CHS students from Cohort AY2025/2026 onwards (excluding FST primary major students) can apply for this restricted second major (Second Major in Food Science) from AY2025/2026 onwards. Students from Cohort AY2024/2025 and before must take Chemistry as primary major.

#Students must meet minimal requirement to read FST1101B. The pre-requisite for FST1101B are:

  • Any two H2 pass or equivalent in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Mathematics/Further Mathematics or Computing
  • Students without H2 (or equivalent) in Chemistry and/or Biology will be required to read the bridging courses in Chemistry and/or Biology (i.e. CM1417/CM1417X and/or LSM1301) respectively.

#Second Major/Minor in Nutrition programme is offered to all students under CHS, including students reading FST as the Primary Major.
#Existing students from Cohort AY2020/2021 and earlier are not eligible to read the Second Major/Minor in Nutrition.
#Students who are reading a minor in Nutrition will be precluded from reading the Second Major in Nutrition and vice versa.

To be eligible for the Primary Major in Food Science and Technology, candidates should satisfy the following criteria:

  • Any two H2 pass or equivalent in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Mathematics/Further Mathematics or Computing
  • Students without H2 (or equivalent) in Chemistry and/or Biology will be required to read the bridging courses in Chemistry and/or Biology (i.e. CM1417/CM1417X and/or LSM1301) respectively.
  • Polytechnic graduates in accredited diplomas with good results may also be admitted through NUS Office of Admissions.

To be eligible for Second Major in Food Science, candidates should satisfy the following criteria:

  • Must be a CHS student (For students from Cohort AY2025/2026 onwards). Must take Chemistry as primary major (For students from Cohort AY2024/2025 and before).
  • Any two H2 passes (or equivalent) in Chemistry or Biology or Physics or Computing or Mathematics/Further Mathematics; and
  • Good pass in gateway course FST1101B Science and Technology of Foods

Having met the minimum requirement does not guarantee one a place in FST since the cut-off point for admission differs from year to year. You may be able to obtain the cut-off point for any major in Faculty of Science for the intake of previous academic year via Indicative Grade Profile.

Local polytechnic graduates should apply through the University’s Office of Admissions, Polytechnic Diplomas from Singapore

Those who suffer from colour impairment are strongly advised not to take FST major as many course components involves colour differentiation.

Polytechnic Diploma holders admitted to the Faculty will be automatically granted 20 units of advanced placement credits (APCs) of Unrestricted Elective Courses (UEM).

Polytechnic Diploma holders with excellent results in food related courses may also apply for advanced placement credits and exemption.

Direct Admissions into Primary Major in FST

From AY2021/2022, direct admissions into the Primary major in Food Science & Technology are conducted via University Admission Exercise. Applicants need to select “Science (Food Science & Technology)” as one of the course choices when applying via the online application during the University Admissions Exercise before the deadline.

Admissions into Primary Major in FST via NUS College of Humanities and Sciences Mid-Stream Application

From AY2021/2022, mid-stream application is open to CHS enrolled undergraduate students who have keen interest in pursuing the Food Science and Technology (FST) major and are reading/have read FST1101B. Only students who have obtained very good results for the course will be considered for mid-stream admission. Other criteria such as overall NUS CAP, high school results etc may be taken into consideration.

Interested CHS students can refer here to submit their applications via the NUS Office of Admissions (OAM) when the application window for course transfer opens in February and October each year, for transfer to FST in Semester 1 and 2 respectively.

Note: Students should apply in the semester when they are reading/have already passed FST1101B. FST1101B will be offered in both semesters from AY23/24 onwards.

Admission into Second Major in Food Science

Second Major in Food Science is a restricted second major and is subjected to approval. Eligible students may apply for this Second Major Programme during the Academic Plan Application Exercise window, subject to the University’s policies and regulations on academic plan declaration, via the Academic Plan Application/Declaration function in EduRec. Admission into Second Major in Nutrition/Minor in Nutrition

Minor in Nutrition is a restricted programme for CHS students which students must apply during the prescribed application window via EduRec. Students will not be able to declare themselves in the Academic Plan Declaration Exercise (APAD) before CourseReg begins for each semester. APAD is only open for minors/second majors which do not require special approval from the host department.

Additional Information

Admission is based on academic merit as well as open competition among all eligible applicants. Please visit the Office of Admissions to check the admission requirements for these programme. The University may also consider applicants for admission based on other merits besides academic results under the discretionary admission (DA) route. Eligible DA candidates, based on evidence of their merits, will be shortlisted for an admission interview.
